Sitio fiesta in Cebu city might cause transmission – officials

Authorities expressed concern over the possible COVID-19 infections in Sitio Lower San Roque Brgy. Calamba in Cebu City following a fiesta celebration which went viral in social media.

Based on the video, hundreds of people were seen dancing and jumping while a musical band was playing.

“I leave it to the EOC [Emergency Operations Center], together with the police to come up – my statement is very clear, no sacred cows,” Cebu City acting Mayor Michael Rama said.

Authorities said they are now investigating some barangay officials and church authorities of the chapel involved.

“Police station 6 already crafted an investigation report on that matter to determine who is accountable for that gathering,” City police chief Col. Josefino Ligan said.

The government reminded the public that social gatherings are still strictly prohibited and health protocols must be followed, despite the green light issued on fiesta celebrations in the city under its general community quarantine (GCQ) classification.

“Padasal lamang dapat iyon, and it turned out na meron silang drum and bugle, at… nag-foot procession sila sa santo, bagama’t sa loob lamang ng kanilang sitio. But just the same, that is a violation,” EOC head Councilor Joel Garganera said.

In-person masses remain prohibited in the city to ensure the safety of people.

The local government and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) have yet to issue the results of their investigation for the filing of cases against liable officials and organizers of the fiesta. – Report from John Aroa/AG-rir
