Comelec reminds poll bets: No campaign donations from foreigners

By Ferdinand Patinio / Philippine News Agency

MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday (Oct. 13) said foreign nationals and companies are not allowed to contribute or donate to the campaign of candidates in the country’s elections.

“Foreigners cannot contribute to any Filipino candidate,” Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said in a Twitter post.

Guanzon’s remarks were echoed by Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez.

“Commissioner Guanzon is correct. Contributions from foreigners and foreign corporations are prohibited,” he said.

This came after a crowdfunding page was launched for the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo, where it said they are accepting donations of any amount.

Jimenez added that charges for violation of election laws await a candidate who is proven to have accepted campaign donations from foreigners.

He also reminded candidates to be careful in accepting donations.

“That should be reported, and if they accept donations from prohibited donors, they could be facing an electoral offense charge which could result in disqualification,” Jimenez said. (PNA) – jlo
