LGUs told to enforce health protocols in evacuation centers

MANILA – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Sunday (Dec. 19) reminded local government units to ensure that health protocols are strictly observed in all evacuation centers following the onslaught of Typhoon Odette.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año made this statement after Dr. Tony Leachon, a former adviser to the National Task Force against COVID-19, earlier expressed concern about the possibility of a spike in coronavirus infections in evacuation centers.

Año said the strict implementation of the health protocols in evacuation centers is being monitored in coordination with the Department of Health (DOH).

He also said sanitary accessories used by evacuees must also be replaced regularly as part of health protocols.

“Members of LESUs (local epidemiology and surveillance units) and contact tracers are also on alert to trace any probable case,’’ Año said.

He also added that the government’s top priority is to protect “the health of our constituents” despite the damage caused by “Odette”.

The DILG chief said all local chief executives (LCEs) in typhoon-affected areas are accounted for.

“Out of 1,025 LCEs, 14 lang naman ang wala and they are accounted naman meaning may reasons why they are not around (during Typhoon Odette) (Out of the 1,025 LCEs only 14 were missing in action and they are accounted for, meaning they have reasons for their absence),’’ Año said.

He, however, said they will still look into the LCEs’ explanation to ensure that the reason for their absence is justified and to determine if there were “some neglect on their part.’’ (PNA) – bny
