BAGUIO CITY – The local government said that the latest data released by the City Health Services Office (CHSO) and University of the Philippines-Baguio Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (UP-DMCS) showed that of most of the 397 people who died due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) recorded from Aug. 18, 2021 to January this year were unvaccinated.
Aileen Refuerzo, chief information officer of the city government, said in a media release on Friday (Feb. 11) that individuals who did not receive jabs “chalked up the highest fatality rate at 4.12%, with 299 out of 7,255 total unvaccinated individuals who contracted COVID-19.”
She added that the same situation was also seen in patients who were infected and categorized as having moderate and severe cases.
“The city’s moderate and severe case records also comprised mostly of unjabbed individuals,” Refuerzo said.
She said out of the 329 moderate cases listed for the period, 180 were unvaccinated, 16 were not eligible for vaccination and 16 were not fully vaccinated, while the rest were fully inoculated.
Also, of the 79 severe cases, 54 were unvaccinated and 3 were not eligible.
Refuerzo said data likewise showed that fully vaccinated individuals who died totaled 82, for a 0.92% death percentage out of the 8,922 total cases.
The partially vaccinated group, on the other hand, posted 7 fatalities and a total of 646 cases for a 1.08% death rate.
For those who are not eligible to receive vaccines, 6 deaths were recorded out of 2,718 cases for a 0.22% fatality rate.
Refuerzo also said that based on the mathematical computation of the city’s COVID-19 data also done by the UP-DMCS and City Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the CHSO revealed that fully vaccinated individuals have 252 times fewer chances of dying compared to the unvaccinated.
It further showed that the odds of dying among the unvaccinated are 109 times more than the vaccinated.
“Data only showed that vaccines delivered on the promise of preventing severe symptoms, hospitalizations, and death,” Refuerzo said. (PNA) – bny
