Congress convenes to canvass votes for president, VP

The Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday, May 24, convened as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) to canvass the votes for the 2022 presidential and vice presidential elections.

Senate President Tito Sotto and House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco led the joint session to begin the counting of votes in the certificates of canvass.

The Senate delegation was composed of Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto, Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, Senator Nancy Binay, Senator Imee Marcos, Senator Grace Poe, and Senator Pia Cayetano .

Meanwhile, the House contingent to the NBOC was Majority Leader Martin Romualdez, Cavite Rep. Crispin Remulla, Cavite Rep. Abraham Tolentino, Pampanga Rep. Juan Bondoc, Negros Occidental Rep. Juliet Ferrer, Ilocos Sur Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan, and AAMBIS-OWA Partylist Rep. Sharon Garin.

Congress is expected to finish the canvassing by Friday, May 27 to push through with the proclamation of the next president and vice president before June. – gb
