Congress proclaims Marcos, Duterte winner of presidential, vice presidential polls

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. became the 17th president of the Philippines on Wednesday, May 25, when a joint session of Congress declared him winner of the May 9 polls, succeeding Rodrigo Duterte who will step down in June after six years in office.

Outgoing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, meanwhile, became the 15th vice president of the Philippines.

Duterte received __ million votes, while Duterte-Carpio won over __ million votes.

Marcos served as Representative of Ilocos Norte’s 2nd congressional district from 1992 to 1995, and previously from 2007 to 2010. He was elected governor of Ilocos Norte in 1998. Marcos became senator under the Nacionalista Party from 2010 to 2016.

In 2016, Marcos ran and lost for Vice President in the 2016 election.

Duterte-Carpio, daughter of outgoing President Duterte, served as the mayor of Davao City since 2016, and previously from 2010 to 2013.

She was also elected Davao City’s vice mayor from 2007 to 2010. – gb
