PCG-MEPCOM installs artificial reefs in Calatagan, Batangas

By Myris Lee

The Philippine Coast Guard’s Marine Environmental Protection Command (PCG-MEPCOM) installed on Thursday, June 9, artificial coral reefs in the waters of Calatagan, Batangas in a bid to “enhance marine biodiversity.”

The artificial reefs will provide shelter and spawning grounds to marine animals.

According to MEPCOM Commander Rear Admiral Robert Patrimonio, the activity will be a big help to the tourism industry of Calatagan.

“The Coral Reef Farm, once fully developed, may also serve as a diving spot, snorkeling area, and fish feeding site which may attract local and international tourists in Calatagan, Batangas,” he said in a PCG social media post.

The government of Calatagan led by Mayor Oliver Palacio, as well as representatives from Miss Earth Foundation and other groups also took part in the activity.   – ag
