DILG urges protesters to hold ‘peaceful rallies’ during Marcos inauguration

By Gabriela Baron

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) called on protesters to hold “peaceful rallies” during the inauguration of president-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Thursday, June 30.

The Philippine National Police earlier said that protesters are allowed to hold protests in freedom parks or in areas that are far from the National Museum, where the oath-taking will be held.

“Ang pakiusap lang po namin sa kanila, na hindi maging unruly o kaya naman maging cause [ng] disturbance itong mga pagtitipon na ito. It must be peaceful,” DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said during the Laging Handa briefing.

“Please keep your protest peaceful, wag na po tayo makipaggitgitan. Wag na po nating gawan ng eksena pa ito, na makikipaggitgitan sila o gagawa ng kaguluhan,” Malaya added.

He also stressed to “respect the decision of the majority” in the recently concluded national elections.

“Sana po ay respetuhin nila ‘yung naging desisyon ng taumbayan noong nakaraang halalan, na ‘yung duly elected administration ay papasok na, kailangan ho ay magkaroon tayo ng orderly transition of power,” he added. – ag
