Obiena finishes sixth in Stockholm Diamond League

by Ashley Bercasio

Asian pole vault record holder Ernest John Obiena finished sixth place in Stockholm Diamond League on Thursday, June 30 (July 1, PH time) in Sweden.

The world’s no. 6 pole vaulter only cleared 5.73 meters, a far cry from his 5.92m golden performance at the Taby Stavhoppsgala just a few days earlier.

The Tondo-born track star tried to vault 5.83m but failed after three attempts.

World no. 1 and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis ruled the 8-player field after posting 6.16m, a new world outdoor record.

USA’s Christopher Nilsen and Brazilian Thiago Braz both cleared 5.93m but Nilsen wound up winning silver via countback. – bny
