House bill filed to make ‘ghosting’ an emotional offense

By Katrina Gracia Consebido

Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr. filed House Bill No. 611 seeking to declare ‘ghosting’ as an emotional offense.

The bill defines ghosting as a “form of emotional abuse and happens once a person is engaged in a dating relationship with the opposite sex which affects the mental state of the victim.”

“Studies have shown that social rejection of any kind activates the same pain pathways in the brain as physical pain, meaning there’s a biological link between rejection and pain. That goes for friends and partners alike,” the bill stated.

It also said that the absence of closure between concerned parties can be likened to “emotional cruelty” punishable as “emotional offense” for inflicting trauma to the “ghosted party.”

Also noted was the changes in the dating scheme amid technological advancements with couples adapting to the modern way of courting and communication.

Teves earlier proposed to change the name of Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Ferdinand E. Marcos International Airport. –ag
