Twenty-eight volcanic quakes were recorded in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Phivolcs also reported that there was a slight inflation of Taal Volcano Island (TVI) and Western Taal Caldera, while deflation was seen in Easter Taal Calder.

Plumes that rose up 2,800 meters were observed while sulfur dioxide emissions averaged at 4,312 tons on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Taal remains under Alert Level 1, indicating low-level unrest.

Entry into TVI, especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, is prohibited.

Occupancy and boating on Taal Lake and flying any aircraft close to the volcano is likewise forbidden.

Steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic quakes, minor ashfall, lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas may also occur. -ag
