DOH: Two new monkeypox cases detected

The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Friday, Aug.19, the detection of two new confirmed monkeypox cases in the country.

According to DOH, the second and third cases are 34 year-old and 29 year-old Filipino nationals who both had a travel history in areas with monkeypox cases. They tested positive for monkeypox virus through RT-PCR test.

Case investigation and contact tracing is being conducted for both cases, and both patients are under strict isolation.

DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said the country is prepared for monkeypox, and that healthcare facilities and hospitals are already implementing necessary health protocols.

“The Philippines is ready for Monkeypox. Our surveillance systems are detecting cases. Our hospitals and healthcare workers know and are implementing the latest protocols to care for cases and halt infection,” she said.

She also urged the public to be vigilant, comply with health protocols, and get the right information from DOH and its partner agencies.

The first monkeypox case in the country was recorded on July 29 from a 31 year-old Filipino national. To date, there are three confirmed cases of monkeypox in the country.   KC-ag
