Filipinos on Sunday, Aug. 21, commemorated the legacy and life of the late former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. as the country marked his 39th death anniversary.

The Ninoy & Cory Aquino Foundation published a short video tribute to Aquino who was assassinated at the tarmac of the then Manila International Airport on Aug. 21, 1983.

“Today, we honor the memory, courage and indomitable spirit of Sen. Benigno S. Aquino Jr., and the millions of beating hearts that stood with his life was offered in the name of freedom 39 years ago,” the foundation wrote.

“His faith made him a hero, and his faith in us made heroes of us all.”

A short celebration of the Ninoy Aquino Day was held earlier at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani led by Project Gunita.

The assassination of Aquino, a top opposition figure during the term of Ferdinand Marcos Sr., started nationwide protests that eventually led to the People Power Revolution of 1986. -ag
