DepEd to LGUs: Avoid unnecessary cancellation of classes

By Gabriela Baron

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday, Oct. 28, urged local government units (LGUs) to avoid the unnecessary cancellation of classes and only suspend classes “only during public emergencies.”

In a statement, DepEd reiterated its stand against the unnecessary cancellation of classes and the use of our schools as billeting areas for events “that are unrelated to the curriculum.”

“The Department of Education aims to not only bring learners back to school, but also institute measures to maximize learning recovery,” DepEd said.

DepEd also extended its “utmost appreciation and gratitude” to LGUs, partner agencies from the national government, non-government organizations, and stakeholders.

“Your support affords uninterrupted class sessions for our learners, and helps our teachers avoid unnecessary make-up classes, which pose an additional burden to their teaching load,” it added.

“[We] enjoin everyone to help our learners recover from learning losses and suspend classes only during public emergencies, severe weather disturbances and calamities.” –ag
