The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Health (DOH) on Friday, Oct. 28, reminded the public to refrain from smoking in cemeteries and memorial parks during the commemoration of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on November 1 and 2.

According to MMDA Acting Chairperson Carlo Dimayuga III, all local government units in the National Capital Region (NCR) will not allow smoking in public places.

“All LGUs in NCR do not allow smoking in specific public places including cemeteries, memorial parks, and columbaria,” Dimayuga said.

Metro Manila LGUs will put up Smoke-Free Task Forces that will impose fines amounting to P500 to P5,000 to all violators.

Dimayuga reminded the public to observe public health protocols in visiting their departed loved ones.

“People paying respect to their deceased loved ones may be exposed to tobacco smoke. Hence, anti-smoking policies will be strictly enforced for this year’s Undas,” he added.

Meanwhile, Acting Head of MMDA Health, Public Safety and Environmental Protection Office Director Neomi Recio urged the public to comply with the health guidelines for their protection from the COVID-19 threat.

“We encourage the public to comply with the guidelines on visiting cemeteries as the threat of the pandemic is still here,” Recio said. –ag
