The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) hailed Dipolog City as the “most lovable city” of the Philippines.

WWF also declared the city as the national winner of the One Planet Cities Challenge during the Cities and the NDC Forum held Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Marco Polo Ortigas, Pasig City.

Initiated by WWF, One Planet City Challenge is a friendly global competition that aims to recognize cities for their climate actions and ambitions and assess whether they align the goals with the Paris Agreement goals.

Dipolog City bested two other national finalists Quezon City and Davao City, and 13 other qualified cities in the country.

Meanwhile, We Love Cities is a public engagement campaign that allows people across the world to express support for sustainable urban development.

The campaign aims to inspire and raise awareness for the sustainability progress being made in cities.

Dipolog City was chosen due to its commitment to cut emissions by 75% by 2030 and be carbon neutral by 2050.

In 2020, Dipolog conducted its first greenhouse gas inventory and came up with an estimated total emissions of 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent generated mostly by stationary combustion of fuel used by households, establishments and facilities. – gb
