The Commission on Elections (Comelec) called on the public to register for the polls while the registration period is open, saying that it is unlikely for the January 31 deadline to be extended.

Based on Comelec’s latest report, more than 1.5 million people have registered nationwide since Comelec resumed voter registration on December 12 through the Register Anywhere program.

Meanwhile, the proposed automation of the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections has been raised at the House of Representatives.

“We will study if we can at least pilot test in certain areas/ precincts the automation of the Barangay  and SK elections…To fully automate is unlikely at this point. We are halfway the printing of ballots for the conduct of manual elections,” Comelec chairperson Atty. George Garcia said.

Garcia warned individuals attempting to register twice that they may face a penalty of up to six years of imprisonment. –With report from Mela Lesmoras/KC-ag
