A Filipino junior pupil from Garden City High School won first place at The English-Speaking Union (ESU) Kansas City Branch Shakespeare competition in the United States (US).

According to the Branch, Pierre Beatrix Madlangbayan impressed the judges by performing a monologue of the character Mark Antony from the play Julius Caesar and reciting a Shakespeare sonnet.

Madlangbayan, sponsored by her teachers Alice Hilt and Roblyn Hilt, received a full scholarship to the Shakespeare Exploration Camp offered by the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival.

A check worth $150 (or approximately P8,300), a certificate of appreciation, and an engraved place medallion were also given to Madlangbayan.

Out of 11 contestants, two students also stood out, Max Markovich from Paola High School in second place and Alyssa Maas from Salina Central High School in third place.

The competition was held on Feb. 19.

Madlangbayan will compete in the ESU National Competition which will be held on April 24 at the Lincoln Center in New York City. – gb
