With several reported cases of heat stress among students, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition recommended shortened class hours and civilian attire, to cater to students’ welfare during the dry season.
Last March, the Department of Health recorded 118 heat exhaustion cases among students.
PTV Digital asked the netizens if they are in favor of the recommendation of the group.
Most netizens agreed it would be better to bring back the June to March calendar of the Department of Education (DepEd).
“Ibalik [na lang] po ang dating sched ng class. Kawawa mga kids pag iiklian ang oras ng class [baka] di rin maintindihan ng mga kids ang topic [nila] sa subjects [nila],” one netizen wrote.
“‘Di na nman natin kailangan mag-adjust para magpa-[impress] sa ibang bansa at the end of the day same diploma, learning tools, and knowledge din naman [ang] na-gain natin in everyday life,” another one justified.
In addition, some parents also agreed with the suggested civilian attire as long as the schools can uphold the students’ safety.
“Pabor ako sa hindi pagsusuot ng uniporme pero sigaruduhin ang safety ng mga bata at guro na walang makapasok na individual na magpapanggap na mag-aaral para makagawa ng kalokohan sa loob,” a concerned parent wrote.
Some netizens suggested a blended learning setup for the whole duration of the summer season to avoid stress on the students.
DepEd announced on Saturday, April 22, that school authorities may cancel in-person classes due to the unbearable heat to protect students and staff. – gb
