DOST: Hypertension cases among Filipinos declining

By Arabella Asis

The Department of Science and Technology–Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reported that the prevalence of hypertension among Filipino adults has significantly declined from 2018 to 2019.

The report was based on the study “Prevalence and Factors Associated with Hypertension among Filipino Adults in Different Survey Periods,” of which the data comes from the 2013 National Nutrition Survey, 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipino Children and Other Population Groups (Updating Survey), and the 2018–2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) by the DOST-FNRI.

The study also revealed that controlled hypertension increases with age, especially in females aged 60 years old and above.

Findings have also shown that hypertension is more common in adult males with higher educational attainment and wealth status.

Hypertension ranked fifth among the top causes of death in the Philippines last 2022. – gb
