BFAR warns against dangers of space rocket debris

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) warned fisherfolk on Tuesday, May 30, against dangers of space rocket debris.

BFAR issued an advisory against fishing in Sta. Ana, Cagayan and Cortes, Surigao del Sur waters, citing the danger of falling rocket debris for ships, aircrafts, and other vehicles.

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute will launch its space rocket KSLV-II from the Naro Space Center in Geheung, South Jeolla on May 24 to 31 from 5:09 to 6:29 p.m.

The space rocket is expected to pass 390 nautical miles (NM) away from Sta. Ana and 217 NM kilometers from Cortes.

“The [Department of Agriculture]-BFAR, based on the recommendation of the [Philippine Space Agency], advises all fishing vessels to stay away from the affected areas and avoid fishing and other offshore activities,” the advisory read.

“Coastal residents near the affected areas are advised to be on the lookout for floating debris that may wash ashore days, weeks, or even months after the launch,” it further read.

The Philippine Space Agency, however, reported that the risk of untoward incidents and damage from falling rocket debris within the Philippines territory is relatively low. -ag
