The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) urged Filipinos to fight fake news and online disinformation that “discredit” efforts to maintain and secure the national interest in the West Philippine Sea.

In a tweet, Spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela urged the public to counter disinformation about the West Philippine Sea and “expose” fake news purveyors.

“When you encounter such disinformation on social media, please take a moment to comment and provide accurate and factual information,” Tarriela said.

“Not countering the spread of lies online risks allowing propaganda operatives and pretend experts in the country to successfully disseminate false narratives that serve only [People’s Republic of China’s] interests,” he added.
