The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) expressed “grave concern”over the reported destruction of coral reefs and marine ecosystems and biodiversity in the West Philippine Sea.

This came after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed “severe damage” in the seabed of Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal.

“Scientific studies have established that the marine ecosystem in the Kalayaan Island Group is critical for the sustainable supply of fish and coral larvae in the Philippines and the region,” the DENR said in a statement dated Sept. 20.

“We, therefore, strongly deplore any activity that leads to the damage and destruction of the coral reefs in the Kalayaan Island Group,” it added.

The DENR said destruction and illegal exploitation of the marine ecosystem is a loss to the world, noting that oceans play a part in the world’s climate, livelihood, food security, and cultural identity.

The statement was issued during the celebration of the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction.

It also called on signatory states and their citizens to adhere to Article 192 of UNCLOS “to protect and preserve the marine environment.”

“DENR understands that the concerned government agencies are exploring the legal options that the country may pursue,” it said, adding that it is “ready to support and be guided by them on these matters.” AG
