Cybercrime cases in the country dropped by 24.72% last month, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG) announced Tuesday.

A total of 1,458 cases were recorded in January compared to 1,937 cases in the same month in 2023, according to the PNP ACG report.

However, despite the overall reduction in cybercrime incidents, the latest data also showed that there was a rising trend in cybercrime cases since only 789 cases were logged in 2022 before it surged to more than 1,000 the following year.

PNP ACG director Maj. Gen. Sidney Hernia noted the significant progress in the “ongoing battle against cyber threats” through the continuous implementation of cybercrime preventive measures.

He said these measures include sustaining partnership and collaboration with public and private stakeholders, providing cyber safety pointers online via CyberTips, engaging in media interviews, hosting informative broadcasts, distributing educational materials, and conducting lectures and seminars.

Hernia reiterated the commitment of the PNP ACG in developing a robust cyber security and cyber-literate society by informing the citizenry about the evolving cyber threats

“The PNP ACG urges the community to fearlessly report any instances of cybercrime or file complaints against these perpetrators. By doing so, we can effectively apprehend these offenders and put an end to their illicit activities, thereby preventing others from becoming victims of cybercrime,” he added. – avds
