Magnitude 5 quake rocks Surigao del Sur

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake jolted Surigao del Sur early Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

State seismologists reported that the quake hit 24 kilometers (km) northeast of Lingig town around 5:16 a.m.

Based on the information bulletin updated by Phivolcs at 6:23 a.m. on April 1, the tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 28 km. 

Aside from Lingig, intensity V was also felt in Hinatuan, while intensity IV was recorded in the City of Bislig, all from Surigao del Sur.

Intensity III was recorded in the Municipality of Boston in Davao Oriental.

Meanwhile, instrumental intensities were logged in the following areas: Intensity III – City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; and intensity I – City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur.

According to Phivolcs, no aftershocks were expected, but damages were likely to occur. – avds
