Vice President Sara Duterte on Tuesday joined calls for proper and humane law enforcement following what she called “questionable” excessive use of force in serving an arrest warrant against Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader Apollo Quiboloy in Davao City.

In a statement, Duterte reminded the authorities to prioritize the safety of the people, particularly civilians and the youth in executing the rule of law.

“Huwag din sana nating kalimutan na ang pandarahas sa ating mga mamamayan ay paglapastangan sa ating demokrasya,” the Vice President said.

“Sana ay mapanatili natin ang respeto, kaayusan, at kapayapaan sa ating bansa,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) defended its “lawful operation” to serve warrants against Quiboloy and five others on Monday as it was conducted in strict compliance with legal security protocols and with due respect to all parties involved.

According to the PNP, it closely coordinated with local officials to ensure a peaceful and orderly operation and minimize potential disruptions to the community.

“The PNP strictly adhered to the guidelines outlined in the PNP Operational Procedures Manual, which underscore the importance of upholding human rights and conducting police operations with integrity,” the agency said.

The operation was conducted simultaneously in the KOJC compound in Buhangin District, in the 25-hectare Glory Mountain in Barangay Tamayong, and in the adjacent 50-hectare Prayer Mountain which are areas that the embattled pastor reportedly visits.

“Recognizing the high-profile nature of the subject, the PNP ensured the presence of an appropriate number of officers during the operation to maintain order and prevent any unforeseen incidents,” it said.

“We are pleased to report that the execution of the warrant was conducted without any harm to anyone,” it added.

Following the failed arrest, the PNP urged Quiboloy to surrender and face the charges filed against him before the court as well as his supporters to “respect the legal process and the fundamental laws that govern our society”. – iro
