To better observe weather phenomena more accurately and come up with more localized forecasts, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) inaugurated a new synoptic weather station in Bulacan on Thursday.

According to PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando, the synoptic weather station situated in San Ildefonso will serve as the direct source of weather information for stakeholders as it is also currently the sole operational weather station in the province.

The several advanced observational instruments installed in the facility include a digital barometer, aerovane and anemometer, rain gauges, thermometers, and solar radiation sensors.

“The station is run by on-duty weather observers and technical personnel round the clock, year-round,” the state weather bureau said.

Aside from weather and climate monitoring, the station will also help enhance disaster risk reduction and management at the local level by strengthening the end-to-end early warning services.

The office can also be arranged to conduct brief discussions on various topics, such as meteorology, atmospheric sciences, and astronomy.

“With this, in order to have direct access to real-time weather information, the locals and the public can now gather or source out weather information anytime and more so during inclement weather,” PAGASA stated.

The San Ildefonso Synoptic Station is the 83rd weather station of PAGASA in the country, Servando noted. – iro
