The Philippines keeps on winning!

Travel magazine Lonely Planet recently hailed the tear-shaped island of Siargao as the number one place to visit in Southeast Asia—besting the tourist spots in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia.

Sought after for its pristine surfing spots, Lonely Planet described Siargao as a tropical paradise known for its “Cloud 9 break, regarded as one of the best waves in the world.”

The travel magazine also highlighted various things tourists can enjoy in Siargao, including surfing lessons, island hopping, cave explorations, live music performances in bars and cafes, and lively local culture.

Notably, the magazine’s commendation of a tiny haven down in Surigao del Norte underscores the growing global appreciation for the country’s diverse landscapes, rich culture, and welcoming community, according to Tourism Sec. Christina Frasco.

“Siargao is a destination that balances adventure and excitement with tranquility and sustainability, catering to all types of travelers,” Frasco said in a statement.

“The acknowledgement given to Siargao is a victory for the island and its people and a proud moment for the entire country,” she added.

Citing the recognition, Frasco reiterated the Marcos administration’s commitment to making the Philippines a tourism powerhouse through the promotion of sustainable tourism and preservation of the country’s natural wonders.

Also on the Lonely Planet’s list are: the coastal area of Amed in Bali, Indonesia; Cao Bang, located in the north of Vietnam; the vibrant nature reserve of Khao Sok National Park in Thailand; the former royal capital of Laos, Luang Prabang; the tropical island of Penang in Malaysia; and Gili Air, one of the islets in Gili Islands, Indonesia. – av
