DPWH ensures safe roads on Christmas holidays

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reactivates its “Lakbay Alalay” program in anticipation of the volume of traffic along national roads this yuletide season.

Secretary Mark A. Villar has ordered DPWH Regional Directors and District Engineers to set up Motorists’ Assistance Stations services from 12PM of December 23, 2017 to 12PM January 2, 2018 to assist the traveling public along the highways in coordination with other concerned agencies such as the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Philippine National Police (PNP) and Local Government Units (LGUs).

DPWH will also operate a skeletal workforce in the Regional Office and District Engineering Offices to receive/transmit reports and instructions that need to be relayed during the Christmas Holidays.

In Region 1, Regional Director Ronnel M. Tan instructed those District Engineering Offices with on-going Long Term Based Maintenance Projects to closely coordinate with the Project Engineers of both the Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) and concerned contractors for the scheduling of road works.

To guide motorists for smooth and easy travel in the Ilocos Region, DPWH also installed necessary traffic advisory and directional/informative/warning signs and initiated in cooperation with the local government units the removal of obstructions along national highways that may delay or impede the flow of traffic.

DPWH has ten (10) District Engineering Offices in Region 1 covering the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan and La Union.

Meanwhile, DPWH Region 6 Director Wenceslao M. Leaño, Jr. in anticipation of the influx of travelers going home during the Christmas holidays ordered the District Engineers assigned in Western Visayas to regularly undertake routine maintenance on carriageway and roadsides.

Leaño also instructed the Maintenance Engineers to ensure that necessary pavement markings, informative and directional roads signs along the national highway in Panay, Negros and Guimaras Islands and are installed to guide motorists for safe, smooth and easy travel.

Necessary traffic advisory along national roads where rehabilitation works are on-going were also installed to ensure safety among motorists and the traveling public. | DPWH-PR
