The Philippine National Police-Maritime Group (PNP-MG) reported the seizure of P22.7 million worth of smuggled cigarettes from April 1 to 19.

This complies with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ramp up the crackdown against smuggling and other forms of organized crime, especially in key maritime areas across the country, PNP Chief PGEN. Rommel Francisco Marbil said in a news release on Wednesday, April 23.

Marbil said the PNP-MG has seized 317 cases, 27,474 packs, 3,168 reams, and three boxes of smuggled cigarettes in various operations during the month, reflecting its strengthened maritime patrols and continued vigilance against illegal trade.

He said the operations also resulted in the arrest of 31 individuals involved in smuggling activities.

The suspects and all seized items are now under the custody of Zamboanga del Sur Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA) for further investigation and legal proceedings.

The latest operation took place at around 2:35 a.m. on April 19, off the waters of Tambunan, Tabina, Zamboanga del Sur, where the Zamboanga del Sur (MARPSTA) intercepted a motorized banca carrying six individuals suspected of transporting smuggled cigarettes.

Seized during the operation were 110 master cases of Fort brand cigarettes with an estimated market value of P6.3 million, a motorized banca worth P120,000, and a Mitsubishi engine estimated at P100,000.

“This is more than just about catching smugglers —it’s about protecting our borders and making sure criminal activity doesn’t interfere with the safety of our people, especially as we prepare for the upcoming 2025 elections,” Marbil said.

“Our Maritime Group has once again shown its dedication to its mandate. With the support of the community, we will continue to push hard against illegal activities in our seas.”
