The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday, denied that the May 12 midterm elections have been moved to May 10, as claimed by an infographic circulating on social media.
“Fake news again, saying the election is being postponed from May 12 [and] will be held on May 10 because of the extreme heat,” Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said in an interview, referring to the infographic.
Citing a “Comelec official,” the infographic claimed that the elections have been moved to May 10 “due to intense heat reported by Pag-asa on May 12.”
But according to Garcia, “nothing can stop the holding of the May 12 elections.”
“The election will be conducted in all precincts throughout the Philippines on May 12,” he reiterated.
Garcia was asked about the possible reason behind the disinformation, he said it is to “disturb [and] confuse our countrymen and to reduce the number of voters who [will vote] on election day.”
“Apart from reducing, they really want to destroy the credibility of the Comelec and our system and our process,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Comelec chief also said they have requested President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to declare May 12 a holiday to give voters an opportunity to vote.
