2 hurt in grenade explosion

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Two people, including a policeman, were wounded in a grenade explosion Tuesday in this city, the police said.

Supt. Hajiri Langgal, Police Station 6 chief, identified the victims as SPO1 Osbert Fernando and Antonio Dela Cruz, owner of the grenade.

Fernando was wounded in the leg while Dela Cruz’ right hand was severed. Both were hospitalized.

Langgal said the incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday near the guard house of Casa Saavedra Subdivision on Crispin Atilano extension in Barangay Tetuan, this city.

Langgal said prior to the incident, Dela Cruz engaged in a heated altercation with his wife, Magdalena, who works as housemaid at the residence of retired judge Ernesto Guttierez.

He said Fernando, who is detailed as Guttierez’ security, pacified them and tried to stop Dela Cruz who wanted to proceed to the residence of Guttierez while holding a Belgium-made PRB-423 fragmentation grenade.

He said the grenade exploded and injured both Fernando and Dela Cruz as it fell to the ground with its safety pin removed. (PNA)
