Gov’t institutions ordered to observe simple Christmas, year-end celebrations

By Dean Aubrey Caratiquet

In solidarity with Filipinos affected by recent natural disasters and calamities, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reiterated his earlier directive on government offices to refrain from hosting lavish celebrations.

This, as Executive Secretary Ralph Recto issued Memorandum Circular No. 110 on Monday, which directs all government agencies, government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs), and state universities and colleges (SUCs) to observe austerity measures during the Yuletide season.

MC 110 stated, “In light of recent natural disasters and calamities in the country, it is necessary to adopt austerity measures during the Christmas season to ensure greater efficiency in public spending.”

The order also outlines provisions and safeguards to prevent the misuse of public funds in the observance of year-end revelries, thereby enabling these financial resources to be diverted towards funding essential programs and public services.

These measures are enacted in light of heightened public scrutiny and frustration after the Chief Executive revealed the flood control mess in July, with Marcos Jr. vowing to institute sweeping reforms in how the government manages its coffers.

The memorandum added that the administration of President Marcos is committed to promoting fiscal discipline and the judicious use of government resources, consistent with the country’s socio-economic priorities and ongoing expenditure management reforms.
