In time for the rainy season and the illnesses that come along with its onset, the government continues to reinforce its programs that look after the health and wellness of Filipinos.
This, as the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) noted the expansion of its leptospirosis benefit package, with qualified patients needing critical care set to receive up to more than P400,000 to cover various medical expenses.
At a briefing on Monday, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro announced that the expanded coverage will be implemented on July 15.
The new package introduced by PhilHealth provides eligible patients with up to P63,000 for hospital care, P170,000 for hemodialysis, and P230,000 for peritoneal dialysis, which amounts to P411,000 in benefits for those needing a combination of hemodialysis, mechanical ventilation, and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by Leptospira that affects both humans and animals and is commonly transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, particularly rats, dogs, and livestock.
In a social media post last week, the Department of Health (DOH) reported a 6% increase in leptospirosis cases from January 4 to June 6, 2026, with a total of 2,177 cases.
This initiative, spearheaded by the state-owned health insurance firm aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure that healthcare access remains attainable and affordable for Filipinos.
