DOH gives P2-M for toilets in evacuation centers in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY — The Department of Health (DoH) Center for Health and Development (CHD) in Bicol has released PHP2 million for the immediate construction and repair of toilets in evacuation centers housing families displaced by the restive Mayon volcano.

Engr. William Sabater, Albay Provincial sanitary engineer, on Monday said that toilets to be constructed are all temporary in nature.

However, the released budget also covers the repair of permanent toilets in different public schools being used as temporary shelters of Mayon evacuees, he said in an interview.

Sabater said all families were provided with water jugs and regular supply of drinking water. “We have mobilized fire trucks and the water tanks of provincial government.”

In addition to the water jugs per family, there are five water containers provided to every 100 persons inside the evacuation centers for their other water requirements.

To prevent any water-related disease outbreak, the Department of Health regional office has set up 11 stations distributed in different evacuations.

DOH regional director Napoleon Arevalo said that all health personnel from DOH and concerned local government units are working very closely to monitor the situation. “We have sufficient supplies of medicines as well as personnel to provide the necessary services to the displaced families.”

He also urged evacuees to help maintain cleanliness inside the evacuation centers. (PNA)
