June 29 – Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents arrested on Wednesday a Japanese national wanted by authorities in Tokyo for involvement in insurance fraud and swindling.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said 38-year-old Suzuki Yuya was apprehended by operatives from the Bureau’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) at his residence along Pearl Street, South Greenpark Village, Severina Avenue Km. 18, Parañaque City.
Morente said he issued the mission order for Yuya’s arrest at the request of Japan’s national police agency through the Japanese Embassy in Manila which informed him that the fugitive had been hiding in the country for more than three years.
Morente added that Yuya was already an undocumented alien when arrested as his passport was canceled by the Japanese government. He said that aside from being an undocumented alien, the Japanese will be deported for posing risk to public safety and security due to his being a fugitive from justice. According to Bobby Raquepo, BI-FSU head, Yuya has an outstanding warrant of arrest issued by Japanese Court in Tokyo on 16 March 2017.
Raquepo said Yuya was charged for committing health insurance fraud from which the latter allegedly earned more than 22 million yen in September 2010 when he falsely claimed to a medical insurance company that he was being treated for cancer. It was learned that Yuya was also charged with defrauding another victim of more than 490,000 yen after inducing the latter to invest in coin trading.
Raquepo disclosed that Yuya had hidden in the country since November 9, 2013 when he arrived in Manila together with his Filipina wife. The Japanese is now detained at the BI Detention Facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig pending the arrival in Manila of a team of Japanese policemen who will fetch and escort him back to Japan. | via BI
