Transport of swine, veggies regulated during sports meet in Antique

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — Transport of swine, vegetables and fruits outside this province has been regulated during the holding of the National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Meet here to ensure ample supply.

Antique Board Member Fernando C. Corvera, Sr. on Thursday said he sponsored a resolution calling for the regulation under urgent matters during the regular session last week to ensure adequate food supply for the athletic delegations.

The province expects to host 6,000 to 8,000 athletes in the National SCUAA, which is slated to open here on Feb. 18 until Feb. 24. But as early Thursday there were already advance parties from different participating regions.

Corvera said they have furnished the different municipalities in the province with copies of the resolution.

“The regulation is (in effect from) from February 15-23,” Corvera said.

Supply of meat, fish and vegetables is one of the concerns raised by the Antique media in a press conference for the National SCUAA at the host University of Antique (UA) based on their experience during the Palarong Pambansa held also in this province last year.

The media practitioners observed that due to high demand, some businessmen took advantage by increasing the prices of basic commodities.

UA President Pablo Crespo Jr. then said he would visit the Department of Trade and Industry’s Antique provincial office to seek assistance in monitoring the prices of commodities.

Meanwhile, athletes also had Lbeen advised to bring their own beddings.

This was also another concern that arose during the Palaro when athletes, especially those who came early, had no beddings because the provision by the Antique provincial government was delivered late. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
