LAOAG CITY — The Department of Education’s (DepEd) office in Ilocos Norte has reminded teachers and parents to observe simplicity in celebrating moving up or graduation ceremonies this end of school year 2017-2018.
DepEd Order No. 25 series of 2017, which prescribes guidelines on closing exercises, has scheduled end of school year rites between April 2 and April 6.
On Thursday, Schools Division Supt. Vilma Eda reiterated to all concerned schools in the province the policy on avoiding excessive spending during graduation rites, including the use of extravagant attire, extraordinary venue, or using the occasion as a political forum.
“Graduation exercises should be simple but meaningful. So, we are appealing to all parents. We know well that there are those who can afford but there are also those who cannot,” said Eda, citing it is more important to focus on teaching values to children, such as simplicity and frugality.
Based on the DepEd memo, all expenses related to the activity shall be charged to the school’s maintenance and other operating expenses, and not on contributions or solicitations from donors.
The contribution for the annual yearbook, if any, should also be on a voluntary basis.
This year’s DepEd graduation rites carry the theme, “Mag-aaral ng K to 12: Handa sa Hamon ng Buhay (K to 12 Learners: Ready to Face Life’s Challenges)”, which highlights the role of the K to 12 Basic Education Program in harnessing the skills and competencies of Filipino learners.
Meanwhile, non-academic projects, such as attendance to field trips, film showing, and junior-senior promenade, should not be imposed as requirements for graduation or completion. (PNA)
