AFP vows to sustain gender programs

MANILA — As the country celebrates National Women’s Month, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has expressed its commitment to sustain its various gender and development programs.

“The AFP will sustain gender and development programs that put the principle of participatory decision-making, empowerment, and respect for human rights to work, for the overall effectiveness of the organization,” AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Bienvenido Datuin said Thursday.

Datuin said the AFP will continue to strengthen the role and capacity of women as an equally important part in the attainment of its goals as a world-class armed force.

“As protector of the people and the state, the AFP is an active advocate and partner of the civilian leadership in the campaign for women’s rights and protection in the country. We will always keep in mind and take into heart that women empowerment and gender equality entail harmonious professional relationship among members of the military and stakeholders, towards a gender-responsive AFP,” he added.

Datuin also urged all men and women of the AFP, military and non-military, to continue to be a catalyst of gender equality and women empowerment.

“Let us continue to promote an environment where people enjoy the same opportunities without the fear of being discriminated for who and what they are,” he said. (Priam Nepomuceno/PNA)
