Antique harvests 12,070 MT of palay as of February

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — The Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPA) in Antique province has reported that farmers here were able to harvest 12,070 metric tons of palay as of February this year.

Ma. Lourdes Fortaleza, OPA Provincial Rice Report Officer, said in an interview Thursday that based on their latest report, which is for the month of February, there were 3,692 harvested areas in the 17 towns of the province except only in Caluya island town that had no harvesting activity.

The average yield per hectare was 3.27 metric ton.

The town of Libertad reported a low production of only 392 metric tons because of the strong winds during the flowering stage of the palay due to Typhoon Urduja.

Culasi town also only harvested 2,100 metric tons from its 745 hectares due to natural calamities, rat infestation and other diseases.

Meanwhile, last January there were also 36,199 metric tons of palay harvested in the 11,463 hectares of rice land.

The average yield per hectare was then 3.16 metric ton.

In areas where water is still available, some farmers in Antique have already started to plant for third cropping. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
