High-school studes gather for 8th ASEAN Quiz nat’l tilt

MANILA — Fifteen of the brightest high-school students from all over the country have arrived in Quezon City on Tuesday for the 8th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Quiz National Level Competition.

The students, who arrived with their coaches, were all winners of the recently concluded regional level competition of the ASEAN Quiz.

The competition, which is a continuing project of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information, aims to foster a spirit of healthy competition among the ASEAN youth in a friendly quiz game that exposes them to ASEAN cultural, political, economic and social information.

The competition proper will be held on April 6 at the Studio B of the People’s Television Network 4 (PTV4) in Visayas Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City.

In a televsion interview, PTV General Manager Dino Antonio Apolonio said the network has been heavily involved in the preparations of the competition as its organizing body.

Apolonio said the state-run television network is hosting the competition in partnership with the Department of Education, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Presidential Communication Operations Office, the Philippine Information Agency, and the Philippine Broadcasting Service.

“It’s an exciting event, this is the eighth. ‘Yung naunang seven ASEAN Quiz, I think four of the seven, Philippines lahat ang nanalo eh. Kaya kelangan eh itayo naten ang bandila naten (It’s an exciting event, this is the eighth. Of the seven ASEAN quizzes before, I think four were won by the Philippines. That’s why we have to raise our flag),” Apolonio said.

Apolonio added that the competition will have three winners who will all receive trophies and cash prizes.

The prize money for the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up will be PHP20,000, PHP15,000 and PHP 10,000 respectively.

“The coaches and schools of the three winners will receive recognition. And, the three winners, I think will receive scholarships,” Apolonio said.

Apolonio said the three winners will represent the country in the 8th ASEAN Quiz that will be held in Bali, Indonesia in August this year. (PNA)
