Lanao Norte town yields loose firearms

MAIGO, Lanao del Norte — Officials of this coastal town led the turnover of 33 assorted loose firearms and ammunition surrendered by residents and village officials to the military on April 23.

Mayor Rafael C. Rizalda said the turnover was the result of the effort and intensified collaboration between the Army’s 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion and the local government.

“The surrender of loose firearms is in response to President Duterte’s call for a gunless and peaceful Mindanao,” Mayor Rizalda said.

He said the residents and village officials gave up their loose firearms “without asking anything in return.”

Lt. Col. Ronel R. Manalo, commanding officer of the 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, lauded the mayor for “his leadership…in uniting the community for a peaceful and orderly town.”

Col. Ezar James P. Enriquez, deputy brigade commander of the Army’s 2nd Mechanized Battalion, described the turnover as “historical.” He noted that the town has been attacked by armed elements in the past, making the government’s past efforts against loose firearms less successful.

“This is small step for us to show that the rule of law is prevailing here in Maigo “ Enriquez said.

He said the military will continue its campaign against unlicensed firearms and will not hesitate to take action against armed individuals and groups.

On Monday, Matungao town officials also led the turnover of 21 assorted high-powered firearms to the military. (Irma Boza/PNA)
