79 unlicensed guns surrendered to Cagayan Valley cops

CAMP MARCELO A. ADDURU, Tuguegarao City — A total of 79 assorted firearms were voluntarily surrendered and deposited by gun owners to different police stations in Santiago City and in the provinces of Quirino and Isabela for safekeeping, police said.

The guns were presented to the media during the visit of Chief Supt. Jose Mario M. Espino of the Police Regional Office 2 (Cagayan Valley) to the Quirino Police on Friday.

Quirino has the highest number of surrendered firearms with 41, followed by Isabela province with 26, and Santiago City with 12.

“We appreciate your cooperation with us. Rest assured your Valley cops will be doing its best to ensure a safe and secure Barangay and SK (Sangguniang Kabataan) elections this May 14, 2018. This is timely as the gun ban is already in effect,” Espino said.

He also reminded the public, especially gun holders, to surrender firearms with expired licenses for safekeeping by the police to avoid any legal impediment in the future.

Under the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition, a gun owner is mandated to surrender his or her firearm to the nearest police station within 15 days after its license expired. (PNA)
