Barangay, SK polls in Zamboanga City ‘generally peaceful’

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Police described Monday’s barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections here as “generally peaceful.”

Senior Insp. Shellamie Chang, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) information officer, said there were no reported untoward incidents when the voting ended at 3 p.m.

But Chang told the Philippine News Agency that they continue to monitor the situation in the ensuing vote count.

The ZCPO has deployed more than 1,000 police personnel for election duty in this city’s 98 barangays that included eight island villages.

Chang said they have standby force ready to respond to any incident, including the Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company personnel deployed in the city’s eight island barangays.

She said at least 50 policemen underwent training as Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs), 17 of whom served as in Barangay Busay, one of the four villages in Sacol Island located east of this city.

Lawyer Stephen Roy Cañete, first district election officer, earlier said they decided to assign policemen as BEIs since the teachers designated in Barangay Busay had reported receiving death threats. (PNA)
