Initial list of 2019 SEA Games sports events revealed

MANILA — Some 30 sports events are included in the initial list of disciplines that will likely be played in next year’s Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines.

Following a deliberation by the executive committee of the SEA Games Federation led by Celso Dayrit, athletics, aquatics, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiards, bowling, boxing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, sailing, sepak takraw, shooting, squash, taekwondo, triathlon, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu, arnis, dancesport, and Muay Thai will be played in the biennial meet pending the approval of the SEAGF council.

Conspicuously not part of the initial list are lawn and table tennis, but the SEAGF Executive Committee clarified that they can be added among other sports events once all the suggestions of the other SEA Games National Olympic Committees will be submitted by June 13.

Filipinos are expected to excel in basketball, billiards, boxing, baseball, and triathlon, while they can also rack up gold medals in athletics and aquatics.

The Philippines last hosted the SEA Games in 2005 and emerged the overall champion. (Ivan Stewart Saldajeno/PNA)
