XTERRA race lures more foreign athletes to Legazpi City

LEGAZPI CITY — Another exciting international sports event will be held in this city with the holding of the XTERRA triathlon event next month.

Mayor Noel Rosal said in an interview Monday that at least 1,000 professional athletes from different parts of the world, including local racers, are expected to arrive to join in the race.

At exactly 8 a.m. on June 17, the race will start in a 1.5-kilometer swim at the Albay Gulf in front of the city boulevard. It will be followed by a 28-kilometer mountain bike race going to the upland portion in the southern areas of this city and an 8-kilometer trail run back to the boulevard.

“Sports tourism is now very popular in this city, different sports events were regularly conducted here during the yearly Ibalong Festival that includes the Mount Mayon Triathlon as well as the national beach volleyball, the dragon boat competition, some PBA games while the Le Tour de Filipinas also conducted its biking races last 2015 and 2016,” Rosal said.

These kinds of events held in the city is a clear manifestation that Legazpi City is considered as one of the safest and beautiful places for any kind of sporting events, contributing to the increasing number of tourist arrivals, Rosal added. (Emmanuel Solis/PNA)
