Ilocos Norte town seeks decent home for every family

Nueva Era’s townsfolk

LAOAG CITY — The local government unit of Nueva Era, an upland town in the province, continues to provide free housing to its less fortunate constituents.

This year, at least 30 units of low-cost housing will be constructed in the far-flung villages of Ugis and Barangobong, which are often hit by typhoons.

According to Nueva Era town Vice Mayor Aldrin Garvida, the local government unit has allocated some funds for the housing project which is meant to provide a decent home for every indigent family in the village.

Garvida said the beneficiaries for the housing project were selected based on their income status. “We continue to build free housing for them as most of their houses were built with lightweight materials. In partnership with the provincial government of Ilocos Norte, the local government unit provides the materials and will shoulder the labor cost,” Garvida said in an interview on Monday.

In previous years, at least 50 bungalow houses equipped with two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen were turned over to indigent families whose houses were destroyed by typhoon.

The housing project was started in 2015 with 50 units now being occupied.

Earlier, the town’s barangays signed a memorandum of agreement to help those families in the construction of semi-permanent structures made from cement and galvanized roofing.

The municipal government, through its engineering office, has identified a location and materials for the housing project. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
