Port of Tacloban exceeds 2018 collection target in less than 6 months

MANILA — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Monday announced that the Port of Tacloban (POT) has already surpassed its collection target for the year with several months left before the end of 2018.

Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña lauded the officials and employees of said port for meeting their target this early, and for collecting PHP360 million which is 34 percent or PHP95.99 million higher than their PHP207 million annual target.

“Port of Tacloban on June 11 has already collected their annual revenue target for 2018 as reported by District Collector Jose Naig,” Lapeña said in an interview during the inspection of the PHP4.5-million onions shipment seized at the Port of Manila (POM) Monday.

The BOC chief attributed the collection surplus and early meeting of the target to the intensified collection effort of all the ports.

“We just want to report in recognition of effort that even this early that this is the result of intensified collection of our different ports, of course,” Lapeña said.

“Percentage distribution of our revenue collection and they were able to collect much more. Allocation for the whole year,” he explained.

For his part, Naig noted that many factors contributed to the surplus and early meeting of their collection target for 2018.

“The Port of Tacloban was able to hit its target for the whole year 2018 due to the increase of arrival of vessels; implementation of excise tax due to TRAIN (Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion) especially on the importation of fuel and cement products; proper valuation and classification; and effective implementation of our action plan,” Naig said in a separate interview.

For this year, the port was assigned to collect PHP267 million, but as of June 11 their collection has already reached PHP362,996,380.96.

The POT official also reported that among their top imported commodities were gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gasoline and cement.

Last month, the BOC has posted 3.9 percent or PHP1.973 billion surplus in its collection over the PHP50.628 billion target for the said period.

The figure is 32 percent up or PHP12.763 billion higher compared to last year’s collection of PHP39.838 billion in the same period.

Earlier, the bureau reported that more than PHP230.18 billion revenue has been collected from January to May 2018. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
