LAGAWE, Ifugao — The government sees the province of Ifugao, with its natural wonders like the internationally admired Banaue Rice Terraces, as an enduring tourism gem of the Philippines and likely a top cultural destination soon.
In a speech delivered by Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs Francisco Tolentino on Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte commended the well-preserved attractions in the mountainous, upland province, which continues to be a paradise for its residents, as well as local and international tourists.
Tolentino was representing the President in Ifugao’s celebration of its 52nd Grand Gotad, which highlights the province’s enduring solidarity, cooperation, and pride of its rich and colorful heritage.
“May these gatherings of traditional dances and songs, exquisite food, and other crafts spark unity among you, as you envision a better and more inclusive growth for your province and the rest of Cordillera,” Tolentino quoted Duterte as saying of the festivities.
Tolentino said the national government sees the province of Ifugao becoming a major tourist destination in the not-so-distant future, featuring the culture and the artistic heritage of the Cordillera people.
“It represents the country’s enduring charm as an important world-class travel destination,” he added.
Tolentino said the province has succeeded in preserving its unique culture, at the same time building stronger communities and paying tribute to its people’s resilient ancestors.
He said such preservation of culture and continuing practice of age-old customs have shaped the country’s diverse traditions and life as a nation.
“Let us forge a stronger nation with the resolve to promote our vibrant traditions as an integral element in strengthening the FIlipino Identity,” Tolentino said, relaying the President’s message.
He said the province’s shared task of looking after the natural and man-made resources has led to the preservation of the Banaue Rice Terraces’ magnificent beauty and its becoming a World Heritage Site as declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
Tolentino sees the beauty of Ifugao as a result of the Ifugaos’ “bayanihan” spirit through the years. Such cooperative spirit, he said, could be seen in the province’s continued efforts to advance its local resources and industries, particularly, agriculture and trade. (Pamela Mariz Geminiano/PNA)
