Antiqueños urged to support BSP coin recirculation drive

SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) urged Antiqueños to support its coin recirculation drive to ensure a sufficient supply of coins.

BSP Iloilo Branch officer-in-charge Doreen M. Santerva, who was in Antique Friday, said there is enough supply of coins circulating in the region.

However, if there is a shortage of coins in stores to give change to their customers, this could be just an artificial situation as there is no existing shortfall of coins.

“There should be no short change because we have enough supply of coins circulating,” Santerva said in a media interview.

She said that the artificial short change could be due to some people saving their coins and not using them to buy their needed commodities.

“People saving their coins in their piggy banks should deposit those in the bank after a while,” she said.
She said that it is by depositing their savings in the bank that they help ensure the continuing circulation of the coins.

Meanwhile, Santerva said people should be discerning about the new coins being circulated now.
She said that the new coins are made of nickel-plated steel that does not discolor while the old coins are made of copper and brass, which have discolored. (PNA)
